Air Filter

An engine air filter — also called an air cleaner — removes dust, soot, and airborne particles from intake air before it reaches a commercial vehicle's diesel engine. It is positioned upstream of the turbocharger and is one of the most frequently serviced consumable parts on a heavy truck. Clean intake air protects the cylinders, piston rings, and turbocharger from abrasive wear.

The filter housing typically holds a pleated primary element that traps the bulk of incoming particles, plus a smaller secondary safety element that guards the engine if the primary is damaged or removed during service. A restriction (service) gauge on the housing or dashboard shows how clogged the element has become, signalling when replacement is due.

As the element loads with dust it restricts airflow, which can reduce power, raise fuel consumption, and increase exhaust smoke. Service life varies widely with the operating environment — heavy dust, construction, or off-road duty shortens it considerably. Many operators replace the element around every 500 to 1,000 operating hours, but the actual interval should follow the manufacturer schedule and the restriction gauge reading.

Choose an element sized for the specific engine and housing; primary and secondary elements are not interchangeable. Confirm the part number against the vehicle specification and the manufacturer catalogue before fitting, and have a qualified technician verify correct seating, since a poorly sealed filter lets unfiltered air bypass the element and damage the engine.

Frequently asked questions

What does a truck engine air filter do?

It cleans dust and particles out of the air entering the diesel engine, protecting internal components from abrasive wear. It sits upstream of the turbocharger.

How often should the air filter be replaced?

It varies with the operating environment. Many operators change it around every 500 to 1,000 hours, but you should follow the manufacturer schedule and the restriction gauge rather than a fixed figure.

What is the secondary (safety) element for?

It is a smaller back-up filter that protects the engine if the primary element is damaged or left out during service. It is not a substitute for the primary element.

How do I know the air filter is clogged?

A restriction or service indicator on the housing or dashboard shows when airflow is reduced. Loss of power, higher fuel use, or more exhaust smoke can also indicate a clogged element. Have a qualified technician confirm before deciding.
