Brake drum

A brake drum is the rotating metal cylinder that the brake shoes press against to slow a wheel.

The shoes expand against the inside of the spinning drum and friction converts motion into heat, which the drum dissipates; drums hold heavy loads well.

Brake drums are fitted at the wheels in drum brake systems. Because braking is safety critical, drums are inspected on schedule and serviced by a qualified technician.
