A solenoid is an electromagnetic coil that produces movement or switches a heavy circuit when energized.

Current through the coil creates a magnetic field that pulls a plunger or closes contacts, operating a valve or, in the starter, engaging the motor.

Solenoids are used on the starter, transmission, and various valves. The correct solenoid matches the circuit and the device it operates.
