A belt is a flexible loop that transfers rotation from the engine to driven accessories.

Running over pulleys, it drives components such as the alternator, water pump, fan, or power-steering pump; a tensioner keeps it tight so it does not slip.

Belts run at the front of the engine. The correct belt matches the length, profile, and pulley layout, and worn belts are replaced on schedule.
