A shock absorber (damper) is a component that controls the bounce of the suspension after the springs compress.
As the suspension moves, fluid forced through small passages inside the damper turns motion into heat, settling the springs so the wheels stay in contact with the road.
Shock absorbers are fitted at each axle alongside the springs. Because worn dampers lengthen braking and reduce stability, they should be inspected and replaced in pairs by a qualified technician.
