The clutch connects and disconnects the engine from the gearbox so the driver can start, stop, and change gears. A clutch assembly is built from a friction disc, a pressure plate, and a release bearing, working against the flywheel. On a commercial vehicle it handles heavy torque and frequent use.

With the clutch engaged, the pressure plate clamps the friction disc against the flywheel so engine power passes to the gearbox. Pressing the clutch pedal moves the release bearing against the pressure plate fingers, which lifts the clamping force and frees the disc, letting the engine keep running while gears are changed. Releasing the pedal re-clamps the disc and resumes power transfer.

The friction disc wears with use, and slipping generates heat that can damage the pressure plate surface. Signs include slipping, where engine revs rise without matching acceleration, a clutch that is hard or soft to press, difficulty shifting, a grinding noise when the pedal is pressed from a worn release bearing, and a burning smell. Because the disc, pressure plate, and release bearing wear together, they are usually replaced as a set, and the flywheel and pilot bearing are inspected at the same time. Riding the clutch shortens its life.

The correct clutch depends on the vehicle model, the engine torque, and the gearbox it serves. Confirm the part against the vehicle specification before fitting, and consider replacing the full assembly together.

Frequently asked questions

What does a clutch do?

It connects and disconnects the engine from the gearbox, letting the driver start, stop, and change gears smoothly.

What are the signs of a worn clutch?

Slipping, a hard or soft pedal, difficulty shifting, a grinding noise when the pedal is pressed, or a burning smell. A technician should diagnose which part is at fault.

Should the whole clutch be replaced at once?

Usually yes. The disc, pressure plate, and release bearing wear together, so they are commonly replaced as a set, with the flywheel and pilot bearing inspected at the same time.

How can I make a clutch last longer?

Avoid riding the clutch or using it to hold the vehicle on a slope, and shift smoothly. Heavy or careless use wears the friction surfaces faster.
