A breather is a vent that lets a housing equalize its internal pressure while keeping dirt and water out.

As temperature changes make the air inside expand or contract, the breather lets it pass through a filter so seals are not pushed out and moisture is not drawn in.

Breathers are fitted on axles, gearboxes, and tanks. The correct breather matches the housing and its port.
